Abstract
Europe:
Perplexed Between Two Impossibilities

     The theme of this issue of Madarat Gharbiya is “The European Structure.” What are the challenges that it is facing, from within as well as from without? What are its prospects in the near future? How is it coping with the ever-controversial questions of identity, nationally and collectively? And how does the development of a much unified and powerful Europe effect its relations with the U.S. as well as with the Middle East?
 

Editorial:
  • In his opening, the publisher, Dr. Mohammad Nehme approaches the problems of the European Construction, and the obstacles facing its path in the future.
     
  • A-Z: In his covering article of the new issue, the Editor-in-Chief, Mr Mahmoud Haidar, writes about the Europe confused between its continental unity and the individuality of its countries.
     
The Issue’s File:
  • The interview conducted by the publisher of "Madarat Gharbiya", Dr. Mohammad Nehme, with the French politician and analyst, Hubert Vedrine, looks into Europe's present and future. In this interview, Vedrine observes that if the Europeans are not able to determine the European personality with other than the international principles, such as democracy and human rights, without identifying its historical and geographical fundamentals and identity, the European project will declare bankruptcy and vanish!
     
  • The American expert Kristin Archik exposes the European policies and points of view over the Middle East, and establishes the basics on which these policies and views are founded.
     
  • In his article "The Open Field to Militarize Europe", the expert in the Group for Research and Information about Peace and Security (GRIP) in Paris, Luc Mampaey, highlights Europe's military strategies and laws organizing relations among its countries.
     
  • Jean-Pierre Escaffre, professor in the French University of Rennes, writes an article entitled "How the U.S Shaped the European Union", and determines four mechanisms that allow the US to control the Union.
     
  • The researcher in Cato Institute's department for exterior policy studies, Leon Hadar, writes an article entitled "Eliminating the US-European Schism over the Middle East", and exposes the factors and causes of the divergence between Europe and the U.S.
     
  • Professor Esther Benbassa tackles the defects in the integration lived by the emigrants in France, noting the causes behind these defects.
     
The Axis:
  • The expert in Political Science at the University of Paris-X-Nanterre, Laurent Bonelli, treats the issue of terrorism in Europe, and the role played by the Intelligence Services in France, Britain and Spain in exploiting this issue.
     
  • The American journalist, Diana Johnstone, writes about the European constitution and war, in an article entitled "No To NATO".
     
  • The journalists' team, at "De Defensa" Belgian magazine, comments on the discussion that took place during the Seventh European Day, organized by IRIS Institute, concerning the question "Is the European power keeping on growing?"
     
The Debate:
  • In his article, the American writer, Stephen M. Walt, exposes the causes of the historical US-European divergence, and determines four factors allowing NATO to exist and prosper.
     
  • The French geo-politician, Pierre Verluise, reports on the US-European relations during 2005, based on an interview he conducted with journalist Jean Ordessa, and published at www.diploweb.com, on 20-3-2005.

Documents & Reports:
  • The editorial staff at Madarat Gharbiya elaborated two documents: the first concerns the internal structure of the European institutions; the second is about the history of the European Construction.

Interaction:
  • In her article "Librarians and Moral Dilemmas", Erena Trochina, expert in International Libraries Science, studies the Internet effect on the information interaction, within the relation among professional legislations, and to what extent it influences work in libraries and archive centers.
